There's a Meatball Revolution...

Ballekes' concept is simple: offer a tasty and typically belgian food experience (meatballs! fries! beers!) in a great environment and atmosphere.

I'd pass by the restaurant almost everyday in the tram and was waiting for the perfect opportunity to finally try it, because fries and meatballs are just AMAZINGLY good in this country and any excuse to have some, is a good excuse!

I planned a small pre-birthday dinner with some girlfriends and we headed over to fill our stomachs and lift our spirits up (it was raining nonstop that week... Typical Belgium!)

When you enter, you have to go to the counter and order your food before being able to sit down.

You can choose between 3 varieties of meatballs: beef/pork, chicken and veggie.

There are 6 varieties of sauces: Tomates, Kriek, Sirop de Liège, and Lapin.

And then you can choose a side of fries or salad, your sauce (the truffle mayonnaise one is to die for!) and finally, your drink.

When you've ordered, you may sit at one of the many tables available in the little restaurant to wait for your food (eagerly!)

Finally, our food arrived and we could dig in!

I had chosen a pork meatball with tomato sauce and the chicken meatball with the sauce Lapin, a side of fries and the aforementioned truffle mayonnaise.

looks yummy right?

Upon first bite, I was sent into belgian food heaven. The meatballs were incredibly moist despite their size, the sauces were absolutely delicious and paired perfectly with the balls and the fries... Those were some very good fries and I don't say that a lot!

My girlfriends and I didn't speak for a bit because we were so bent on enjoying every single bite and loving it.

Now, I'm not a HUGE eater and usually really have to force myself to finish dishes I'm given, and this was no exception. But I did not mind, because there was NO WAY IN HELL that I would leave a single piece of food uneaten.

By the time I finished, my stomach was very close to bursting at the seams when we collectively decided to have some dessert (thank goodness for dessert stomach, amirite?) and each took a Speculoos tiramisu to effectively send us into a food coma.

I have to admit it wasn't the best I ever tasted but it was still good, though a bit on the expensive side for what it was (4.50 euros).

I absolutely loved the place though, the food, the atmosphere, the prices... It all works infinitely well together and this is definitely going to be a staple when I want to eat some belgian comfort food at a good price with friends, family or my partner.

It's safe to say: I joined the meatball revolution and I do not regret it!
